It took a long time to get our food because it was packed, but it was really good. We usually go to Nations or Pho to get in and out, but it's nice to be able to sit around and talk before we eat every once in a while. As I get older and Nick and I are thinking more about the prospects of having children, I appreciate the closeness of my family more. Plus, these may be the times I look fondly back on when I have a kid and (s)he is screaming in the highchair.

Today's Lunch: May 5, 2013
Nick was at a shooting match so I called up my family to see if they wanted to go out for lunch. We decided to try something new. I had gone to Min's Kitchen with the girls a few months back and suggested that we try it. Apparently my parents had already gone for Valentine's Day because my Mom thought that it was a Chinese restaurant. Turns out that it is an American-style diner.

Tonight's Dinner : May 4, 2013
I was very excited that I was finally caught up on my blogging and then that night I cooked again. Blogging never ceases! It had been a while since I had cooked for my parents. I was home doing laundry (lots of it) so I thought that I'd cook for my family. What do we love best? A crab and shrimp feed of course!
When I went to Ranch 99 to check out the crabs, the dungeness crabs were $7.99/lb. The tank was full of Rock Crabs that were $3.99/lb. It was a no brainer. We had never had them before, but they were actually really good! I made the mistake of not asking the fish monger to show me the crabs first because a few of the crabs were missing legs. One poor soul was missing all his legs except for his claws. I felt a little bad for him, but I was going to eat him so it didn't matter. The legs on these crabs are also very tiny. They are similar in size to a lobster. While their legs were itty bitty, their claws were very large. Their shells are also much thicker than dungeness. I think that Rock Crab is a pretty good substitute.
Normally, we just boil our crab and prawns and I make a Chinese style dipping sauce. This time, I tried using Zatarain's crab and crawfish boil. Thinking that it would drastically change the flavor of the crab, I didn't make the sauce. I should have made the sauce. Because there was so much crab and prawns, there wasn't enough seasoning. When have too much crab and prawns been a problem? Regardless of the lack of sauce, we enjoyed out dinner together.

My dad really likes bruchetta and requested to have it as an appetizer. "That thing that you made one time. The toast with tomatoes on top. Is it hard to make? I like simple."

Tonight's Dinner: May 2, 2013
My plan tonight was to make more chicken with salad, however, Nick called me midday to tell me that one of their clients had sent them a giant salmon. Since his boss is planning on going out of town next week, he gave the fish to Nick. Nick thought that it was only fair for him to cook up the fish and bring it in to the office for his coworkers. Of course, we had to taste test what we would be serving. Since salmon is my least favorite fish, I had to disguise the flavor by making another taco.
Tonight's Dinner: May 1, 2013
The fish taco from Yankee Pier was so good that I wanted to make my own. Nick went to pick up supplies while Emmy and I went for a walk. I think this may be the only way that I can eat fish. So good. We also grilled up some corn and I made a giant salad to have with the tacos. Eating the salad first always makes us eat less and feel healthier at the same time.
Emmy Picture Post
It's that time again.
Emmy wasn't feeling well and being really clingy. This never happens so I knew that she wasn't feeling well. She had her paw on me for so long that there was a paw print mark on my leg!
It's been so hot after our runs that I take Emmy to the car wash station in the back of our complex to hose her down.
Tonight's Dinner: April 30, 2013
Much like last night's dinner, I marinated chicken during my run. I mixed honey and soy sauce to make a sweet glaze and also boiled up some artichokes. Nick ate left over asparagus and I had the second half of my chicken breast from the night before. I left the sweet glazed chicken for Nick.
Tonight's Dinner: April 29, 2013
Along with juicing, we are generally trying to eat a little leaner. It makes it difficult when I like to eat out for lunch, so my new diet is to have a green juice in the morning, have what I want for lunch, and a light, lean dinner. Our NWD is still in place so we are trying to use up all the veggies that I bought for our juicing. Not only am I using a ton of spinach for my juice, we use it for our salads as well. Nick seems to be enjoying the juicing much more than I am because he actually likes juice. Making it ourselves definitely beats me buying sugar-packed juices in the store. So for him, it's a much easier diet to stick with. I, on the other hand, am struggling a little bit. I don't enjoy fruit in my juice at all, but drinking a lot of green juice is taking its toll. Just seeing the neon green makes me feel a little too healthy. I do have to say that I much prefer the taste of spinach based green juice to kale based. I may have to cook the kale instead of juicing with it.
Tonight for dinner I marinated two chicken breasts in soy sauce, garlic and onion powder, Worcestershire sauce, and red pepper flakes while Emmy and I went on a run. Let me tell you. It is getting so much harder to run with this heat, but we are managing to get 3-5 mile runs in. It's going to hurt to do the Danville half marathon at the end of the month, but at least we're getting out a little bit. Nick has been much more faithful with his morning runs with Emmy.
Once I was back from my run, Nick grilled up the chicken and some asparagus. I made a large salad and quinoa for the chicken to rest on. After eating the salad, I ended up only having half a chicken breast. The eggs and olives made the salad a little too heavy for the late April heatwave that we are experience.

Today we had planned to go try some Livermore wineries, which I long ago dubbed "Nuclear Wine". It was actually pretty good. Though it was really hot, the tasting rooms were not full of pretentious tasters and the prices were much more reasonable than Napa. Now that Nick and I have been going to Napa more frequently to wine taste, I've become more aware of how snooty Napa people can be. Good wine is whatever you like. I don't care so much about the hints of pineapple or cherry or if it's $5 or $100. If I like it, that's what matters. Even better if I can get it on the cheap. I definitely prefer Sonoma to Napa and now Livermore to Sonoma.
Once we were done tasting, Linda had graciously gotten us a reservation at a local BBQ restaurant called Sauced. It was really good and I plan to go there again the next time I'm in the area visiting. We ordered quite a bit of food. We started with frickles and jalapeno poppers stuffed with pulled pork. How much better can jalapenos get?! Nick ordered blacked ends brisket and I ordered the regular brisket with a side of pimento cheese. After my first visit to Georgia with the Levies, I have been in love with the stuff, but rarely get it.

Juicing
Since our attempted juice cleanse, Nick and I decided that we would try to make our own juice with my Mom's Vitamix. So far it is going okay for us, but I'm still trying to get used to it since I'm not really a juice person. Also, since we are using a blender and not an actual juicer, the juice is very thick and frothy. I tell myself that all the nutrients are in the foam, but I just can't drink/eat it. I scoop it out and feel guilty, but it's better than not juicing.
Before dinner with Nick's family, I did a quick Costco run which resulted in me buying more vegetables that we know what to do with. This is what happens when I get overzealous and am in a rush.

Tonight's Dinner: April 27, 2013
After going to a short ballroom dancing class with both of our parents, Nick and I met up with his family for his birthday dinner. Since we had been in the City that morning, we wanted to keep it pretty local. One of our choice restaurants is Yankee Pier in Lafayette. We've been here a few times, but this was my first time having a fish taco. Now that I've had theirs, I've been on a fish taco kick. Yup, it's just that good. I didn't feel heavy and overly full after eating them. I think that the pictures will speak for themselves, but I highly recommend the fish taco since it's one of the few things on the menu that is not fried. It was just too hot this evening to eat fried food.

Today's Lunch: April 27, 2013
Today we had a big day of eating. It started with dim sum with my Grandma, something that I always love. We have dim sum where we live, but the quality isn't nearly as great as it is in San Francisco. It was all standard fare, but I wanted to post a picture of it because it was a lot of food. ...and we finished all but a few buns. We actually had a few other items that came before the onslaught of food too.
