Tonight's Dinner: February 10, 2013

Eek!  I'm so far behind in my blogging.  It was quite a busy week so I haven't had the time.  Plus, since Nick and I were gone all weekend I wasn't able to go to the grocery store so I haven't been as motivated to blog about left overs and ramen noodles.

What a busy Sunday we had.  I hate having busy Sunday's because it makes me tired for the upcoming week.  First the 10k, then Chinese New Year lunch with my family, and then Melissa's birthday dinner. After trying not to eat a ton of food at Moonstar, Nick and I rushed back to my Grandma's house to change for dinner with the Fongs. We headed down to The Wayfarer Tavern in the financial district for an early dinner.  Even though I had a pretty big plate at Moonstar, I was still hungry since I had done the run in the morning.  Nick, however, wasn't hungry at all.  It was a shame because he had tried not to eat a lot a Moonstar to save his stomach, but it didn't seem to work.

The popover style bread was very light and airy.
We started out with deviled eggs, oysters on a half shell and beef tartar.  I
found the deviled eggs to be a little on the salty side, but the filling was very
smooth and creamy.  I think the little fried shrimps on top made them even
saltier.
Beef tartar with a quail egg in the center.

Ahh, this is my favorite.
Mrs. Fong got the muscle appetizer as her entre.
Melissa got a veal schnitzel.

Mr. Fong got their famous fried chicken.

Brussel sprouts to share.

Mac and cheese to share.

Nick got the Poutine appetizer as an entre, but couldn't finish it because he
was too full.

I got the 28-day dry aged steak over potatoes.  Yum!  The steak was perfectly
cooked at rare, the way I like it, and the potatoes were creamy and super
smooth.  I'm pretty sure that they used a food mill to get it to this consistency.

We ordered a dessert, which I forgot to take a picture of, but they also brought
out a complimentary dessert.

Tonight's Dinner: February 9, 2013

As a thank you to our friend Melissa for doing our engagement photos, we met up with her in the evening for drinks at The Trappist in Oakland.  Even though we had a very late lunch, I was starving.  The food that they were serving looked pretty darn good for pub-fare.  I got a grilled cheese that was fancier and creamier than any grilled cheese that I've had before.  I'm not sure if that's a good or bad thing.  It was super rich, which actually made it go really well with my blonde beer. I really enjoyed the crunch of the bread. They did a good job of browning it up without burning it...something I've never been successful at doing.  I'm sure that tons of butter was involved, but I wasn't think about that at the time. We also ordered the charcuterie plate and later on in the night Nick ordered a Reuben.  I enjoyed The Trappist as I love dive bars, but we weren't able to stay late because Christopher and I were getting up to run a 10k in the morning.

I'm really not sure what kind of cheese was in this sandwich.  It was extremely
rich and gooey.  I want to say it's gruyere, but I can't be sure and they didn't
list it on their menu. It didn't taste like regular Jack or Swiss, so it could be
anything! Their pickled vegetables were to die for.

Their charcuterie plate was also very good.

Engagement Photo Day

We weren't sure if we wanted to take engagement photos as we didn't know what we would do with the photos afterwards, but decided that we should since it is one of those once in a life time (should be anyway) events.  After playing with many different ideas for locations, I asked my cousin if we could borrow her kitchen.  Nick and I realized that all of our hobbies are much different from each other, but the thing that we do most together is cook.  Next to cooking comes eating.  They come rather hand-in-hand, which made the kitchen seem like the natural setting for our photos.  My cousin has a gorgeous kitchen and it is much bigger and well stocked than our tiny galley.  We had to think long and hard about what to serve that would be brightly colored and photogenic.  We settled on mussels in white wine sauce, salmon sandwiches with creamy watercrest spread, and a fruit tart.  We chose the mussels over clams, which we both prefer, because of the rich color of the mussel shells in contrast with parsley and tomatoes.

We haven't received the photos yet, but we will be posting a few on our wedding website when that is up and running.  I don't want to be overly narcissistic so I'll only email pictures upon request. It took us forever to make this lunch because we would have to stop and pose.  Nick and I are really quite awkward when it comes to posing.  Our photographer friend said that I either looked too serious when I was cooking or was goofing off too much.  She also kept telling us to not use our goofy smiles.  Little did she know that those are our normal photo smiles.

Nick was in charge of the fish and it turned out beautifully.  Since I don't really enjoy eating fish, he is the one who cooks it most.  With the watercrest dressing and sour dough bread it was amazing.  The dressing really helped mild out the salmon flavor, which was perfect for me.

Nick seasoned the fish with salt, pepper, minced garlic, lemon
zest and some juice.

I used way more watercrest than the recipe called for and
didn't use as much mayo as it was supposed to have.  It was
very flavorful and less fattening.

Before heading out to the Oakland Hills, we stopped by Boudin's to pick up
a round and baguette of their famous San Francisco sourdough.

I cooked the mussels for just a few minutes before scooping them out into a
bowl.  I probably should have reduced the sauce before putting the mussels
in, but it was my first time working with mussels in this fashion.  Usually, I
make clams, which have much thicker shells and take longer to cook.
I reduced the sauce down by half and then poured it over the mussels
 before serving.

My cousin Brandon had requested that we make a fruit tart.  So a fruit tart we
made.  The crust was so unbelievably easy.  It was literally just flour, butter,
and confectioners sugar.  I used the recipe from a Raspberry Tart for the crust
as most of the crusts that I was looking at had a ton of shortening and butter.
We are all trying to be figure-friendly after the holidays and this tart crust recipe
had the least amount of fattening ingredients in it.  The recipe was also super easy
to make and turned out deliciously. Pretty good for a first try.

For the topping of the fruit tart, I used a different recipe with fresh fruit. I
actually forgot to put the apricot preserves over the top, but it was still really
good. I don't like desserts, but this one was really tasty.  The crust was light
and flaky and the cream topping wasn't overly sweet.  We macerated the
strawberries with sugar since they are out of season and were rather tart.

Ta da!  We added vine-ripened tomatoes and mixed salad
greens.

Tonight's Dinner: February 6, 2013

The last few nights I've been working out like crazy.  On Monday Emmy and I ran 5 miles and then went to the gym with Nick to do an arm work out.  With the new running shoes I bought, Merrell Glove Shoes, they force you to run on the balls of your feet because they are so thin (most of the padding is in the ball).  I've known for a long time that it how you are supposed to run, but have never been able to do it.  My calves have been sore for three days and my Mom even said that they are looking bigger.  I'm on my way to having tree stumps for legs.  The worst part is that it's all muscle so I can't really do anything about.

Me: Feel how hard my calves are.
Christopher: Wow.  Let me try.  *feels his*. Awwww.

After Monday's run, I still made myself go to Zumba on Tuesday and then run hills with Christopher on Wednesday.  Tonight I have Zumba toning and then I get a rest on Friday and Saturday before a 10k in the City on Sunday.  My legs are going to be so tired come Monday.  I've already been hobbling around my office.

Since I was at my parents' place working out, I stayed for dinner. I had a really terrible day at work so I took myself to pho for a late lunch and ate a ton of noodles. By the time dinner rolled around I didn't want anything to do with carbs.  I ordered mustard greens in garlic sauce and salt and pepper squid instead of my usual chow mein.  I didn't realize that the squid would be fried so I only had a little bit of the squid and mostly ate the mustard greens.

Christopher got Hot and Sour soup.  I don't really care for hot and sour too much
but I thought I might have a change of heart.  Nope.  It tasted like how stinky feet
smell.

Super Bowl Party

Right after coming back from Linda's bridal shower over-nighter, I was getting the apartment ready with Nick for a Super Bowl party.  Well, we all know how that ended, but I still had fun anyway.  We served all the junk food that I could get my hands on.  We had taquitos, pizza, mini tacos, chips and salsa, fat kid sauce (chili, cream cheese, salsa, hot sauce), various dips and spreads, cheese, and drinks.  I didn't take pictures of much since it was a general fried brown color, but I'm sure you can picture how our coffee table looked.   The only really good picture I got was of my dips because I thought the dishes that my friend Genna gave me were so cute.

We still have a ton of leftovers and even some frozen foods that we didn't bring out because everyone was full.  This is going to be a slow dinner week as we will be finishing off what we have in the fridge.

Linda's Bridal Shower

Linda's bridesmaids and I have been planning her shower for the last few months.  I had offered to be in charge of the food as it is something that I frequently plan.  One of the girls' uncle is a manager at the San Jose Fairmonte and was able to hook us up with a giant suite to host the shower in.  Knowing that Linda loves salad and that I wouldn't have a place to warm up food, the logical menu answer was for a salad bar. Unlike Linda, however, I need more substance to my salads than just lettuce and tomatoes.  I decided on preparing a fully loaded salad bar with some cold appetizers.

On Friday night my friend (groom's sister/bridesmaid) Jess came over to help me prepare.  Once she came over though, there was more socializing than work being done.  I was supposed to go running with Christopher on Saturday morning before the bridal shower, but that didn't end up happening because I had a lot more prep work to do.  We did however, try out the cocktails that I was planning on serving.  They were quite strong and delicious.  The shower turned out to be a huge success and Linda had a lot of fun and I got to know the other bridesmaids better.

Our full menu was as follows:
Salmon Spread
Olive Tapenade
Roast Pepper Tapenade
Various Crackers
Classic Bruschetta
Costco spinach pancake app with sauces
Mixed Greens
Spinach
Pomegranate
Dried cranberries
Walnuts
Olives
Shredded Cheese
Cherry Tomatoes
Black beans
Vinaigrette
Champagne
Champagne Mojitos
Mimosa
Sparkling Ciders

Linda has been very into champagne lately.  I made it the
base drink of the day.  The Champagne Mojitos were the
signature drink.

On Thursday night I began marinating my meats and
portobello mushrooms. I used a basic marinade from all-
recipes.com for the steak.

I also pulled from Allrecipes.

Grilled bacon is a standard for us as it really lets the fat
drip off better than any other method.  During the winter we
put the bacon on this cooking rack to bake in the oven if
grilling isn't an option.

I'm really surprised at how much people loved the portobello
mushrooms.  People were asking me for my recipe and I was
sorry that I only made three.  Really, all you have to do is marinate
the mushrooms in bottled Italian dressing for a day and then
grill it.
