The Chin Brewery

Yesterday my dad, brother and I start the first day of a two week brewing process.  We got all of our supplies at a local store called MoreBeer!  They were fully stocked and the staff was very helpful and friendly.  The guy who helped us didn't try to pressure us into buying some uber expensive kit since he knew that we were just starting out.  Plus, one glare from my dad and he probably would have fallen off his stool from fright.  We learned long ago that my dad is not easily swayed to buy unnecessary tools and kits when he can make them himself...sales men have not.  But the guy who helped us was very pleasant and eager to please.  He even showed us how to grind our grain in the grinder that they provide for their customers.

For now we're starting out small by only doing 2.5 gallons at a time rather than the 5 gallons that recipes normally call for.  This is a good family project.  My dad likes it because of the chemistry behind the brewing, my mom likes it because she gets to take pictures, Christopher likes it because he gets to measure stuff and it's not that much work, and I like it because I get to drink it.  Hahaha!  Because I will be main consumer of this beer, we chose to make a Honey Wheat, which is one of my personal favorites.

This Honey Brown is one of my all time favorite beers.  I should look to see if they have it at BevMo since this is another one that I discovered when I was in NY.  Besides my beloved Yuengling, this was another top five beer in my book.

The actual brewing process isn't difficult at all, you really just need to be able to set the time away to do it.  It is even easy enough that you can do this by yourself, but you kind of need someone else to help pour at the end or at least hold your funnel.  Each step takes a while to simmer and boil.  Our house didn't smell so pleasant, but we're done with the concocting part.  Now we just have to wait 7-10 days for it to ferment and then we can bottle it up with some sugar to make it carbonated.  The directions say that there will be bubbles between the first 12-24 hours of fermentation.  We're seeing bubbles, but not that many bubbles.  Hopefully we didn't manage to kill our yeast somehow.  We will have to wait and see.  It smells like normal beer minus the fizz to me.  Here are the pictures of our first day.

And now we wait!  Hopefully this turns out well so that we can keep doing it.  We didn't want to invest in a kit since they're a little pricey for the good ones.  This batch should make us around 35 bottles, which is good enough for a first try.  If it turns out well then maybe we will decide to buy a nice kit so that things are a little easier, but for how we're doing it bootleg style.  When we get to the bottling portion I will give you an update. C'mon beer, bubble!

The Game

Oh man, what an awesome experience.  When we first got to the arena Nick and I bought tickets for another game in February just so that we wouldn't have to pay the Ticketmaster fees.  They rob you!  But our cheap, nose-bleed seats won't be able to compare to this view.  Even though we were high up in the box, it was still super cool to be able to stand up and just go get some drinks or something to eat.  They provided everything.  You name it, they had it.  It was really awesome.  They even gave us hats and Sharks magazines!  The only thing that I was worried about was that the edge of the box goes directly into the seats.  There was no partition or hand rail there to block anyone from falling or accidentally kicking the people in the top row when walking by.  When I get excited I tend to move forward, even if I'm sitting down.  So when I was getting excited for goals and fights I was truly afraid I was going to embarrass myself and my family by rolling down a hundred steps and end up with a broken leg at the bottom while everyone pointed and laughed.

At first the box was pretty packed with people settling down and saying hello to one another.  Mr. Wong, Brandon's dad and the one who invited us all, said that most of the people at the game were friends and family so we didn't feel uncomfortable being the only family-of-family amongst a business party.  Everyone who was there was super nice and we had a great time.  The best part was that the Sharks won!  I'm not exactly sure how it happened, but Jen Jen missed all the goals. It was the funniest when she had to put her drink in a plastic cup and the minute she turned around to go up the four or five stairs to the box they got their fourth goal.  The final score was Sharks-4 and St. Louis Blues-2.  Go Sharks!

Upcoming Sharks Game

A couple of days ago Jen Jen invited Nick and myself to sit with them in a suite at the Sharks game.  Oh man, we're excited.  Nick was pumping his fists and jumping around like a little kid.  We've arranged for my family to watch Emmy when we go down.  We were originally going to spend the day in San Jose and then try to find some last minute tickets at the box office, but then my parents ended up having to go to a funeral so our plans were foiled.  Christopher and Briana were going to go to a movie the same night so Nick and I figured we'd just skip the game and spend a nice relaxing evening at home.  When Jen Jen offered us these awesome tickets it was just too good to refuse.  Seeing how much we wanted to go to the game, Christopher and Briana agreed to go to the movie Friday night instead and then stay home until my parents got back from their funeral.  Yay!  So now we're gearing up to do some serious eating and hockey watching.  Go Sharks!

Emmy's Safety Necklace

Now that my hours have changed at work and I have to get up an hour earlier, I've been having trouble waking up at 8am to walk Emmy.  I know, I know, most everyone is already at work by 8am.  Anyway, so I've been taking her on more walks at night.  I put on my headlamp and yellow vest as previously stated in an earlier blog and we head out.  Since Emmy likes to walk in front of me, I'm afraid that people won't see her.  I know that she is bright white and easily spotted, but just in case I got her a new glowing necklace (collar).

It came in the mail today and I got it all adjusted for her size.  For $16, I think this is a pretty good investment.  Even with her long fur you can still see the glowing orange necklace.  The other color option was red, but I figured orange was the best one especially since the fabric itself is pretty neon.  She's like a little doggy construction worker now.  There are two light modes on the necklace: solid light and blinking.  I usually put my headlamp on blinking just so that people are aware that I'm around and will probably put her setting on blinking too so that we match.  Hehe.

Author's Note

I'm trying to go back to my old style of subject-by-subject posting.  It is a lot easier for me to do this rather than save up weeks worth of events and cooking expeditions.  The posts will be shorter and hopefully more concise, as I tend to ramble...like now.  So, we'll see how long this keeps up.  Haha, before we all know it, I might be back to doing bi-monthly posts.

A few weeks ago Linda introduced me to Etsy.com.  I had been considering buying some little flower earrings from either Amazon or Overstock.com, but she said that people on Etsy make the same thing for much cheaper and they're cuter.  I had to check it out.  After searching around on it for a while and seeing all the different categories of crafts that people sell on the site, I did seem to remember that Bonnie and Abby mentioned the website to me a while back.  I'm addicted.  The stuff is indeed much cuter and more affordable.  The vendors who I purchased from were all super nice and easy to contact if I needed to.  Since everything is made by the artist, they ship it out promptly and the shipping is really inexpensive.  I think the most I paid for shipping was $2.99!  I hate when I want to get something small and then the shipping costs more than the thing I'm buying.  I cannot stop saying good things about this site and the vendors I purchased from.  The best part?  I spent less that $60!  This is what I got.

These pink earrings are what originally prompted Linda to direct me to this site.  On Amazon I was going to buy some that were pretty much the same thing for $12.  These were only $3.50!

Since I had ordered three pairs of earrings from BeadsByDesi, she contacted me to tell me that I could have a free pair.  Sweet!  This purple pair was what I chose.  I was afraid that maybe she had already packed up the other sets and sent them, but she said that she had waited a day to see if I would respond before she sent them out.  So I got my free pair.  On top of that, since she makes everything to order, she included a free bobby pin with a matching pink rose like the first set of earrings.  The shipping was only $2.00 and she combined them all together so that I didn't have to pay extra.

I've been into wearing different earrings lately since I took out my plugs so I'm glad that I found these.  Because I wore the plugs for so long, which are made of surgical steel, my ears don't seem to have a bad reaction to wearing earrings anymore.  (Knock on wood) I used to only be able to wear silver or gold, which got pretty pricey.  I highly recommend BeadsByDesi if you like the ones I purchased.  I had such a positive experience with her.  There are quite a few vendors who do very similar designs, if not the same, but I thought that she was awesome.

My weird little dog LOVES to eat these weeds.  Usually on our walks she's pulling me down the block, but whenever she sees this stuff she stops to eat it and I have to pull her along.  I'm not sure what it is, but she loves it....when it's fresh.  Saturday night we went over to this hill that is full of this stuff and I picked it for her.  Meanwhile she's munching away like it's a feast.  When I get it home she ate it a little, but hasn't touched it since.  It kind of looks like it's dying now so we'll see what happens.  Maybe it's only good when it's outside or something.  Nick was flabbergasted that I would buy her a pot just to plant her weeds.  She is a spoiled dog after all.

Since his school has been out for winter break, Christopher has been sleeping at the oddest hours.  The other day he stumbled into my room with hair like this at 2pm.

And last night he slept on his floor because he had washed his sheets and didn't put them back on; plus piling a huge stack of clean clothes.  Then he came into my room and slept for another two hours.  Emmy thought that naptime was great since she had already been up for four hours.

In between making the fish dinner, Nick and I butchered four whole chickens for this week's dinners.  Nick has a great time doing it and even times himself to see how fast he can go.  It's really cost effective at only 98 cents a pound at our store.  I've frozen the carcasses to make a chicken stock in the coming weeks.

Mastering the Art of French Cooking: Take One

This weekend Nick and I decided that we we should try to make something from Mastering the Art of French Cooking by Julia Child that Uncle David and Auntie Wendy gave me for Christmas.  I love this book.  It feels great in my hands, smells like a new book, and there are cool dictionary-style drawings in it.  After reading Julie and Julia by Julie Powell I knew that it would be a lot of work to start experimenting with French food.  Nick and I figured that since we enjoy French bistros a lot but can't always afford to go to them, that we would try to start making the food ourselves.  Now I know why it's expensive.  It's a lot of work.  It's not that the techniques are difficult or that the recipes are that complicated, it just takes a long time.  Well, let me restate, the recipes are complicated, but not because of the techniques, but because it sends you all over the book looking for various minor recipes.  If you want to do fish in white wine sauce with mushrooms (our dish) you have to go back to the master recipe for fish in white wine sauce.  To make the fish in white wine sauce, the book sends you back to the fish stock recipe that you only really need about one cup of.  This wouldn't normally be a problem as many books do this and you can buy fish stock in the store, but we were bent on doing everything from scratch.  And when I say from scratch, I mean from scratch.

First we spent at least two hours Saturday night on AIM discussing what we wanted and what particular techniques meant.  There is one section that was quite confusing.  This is what it said:

In Margin:
Buttered brown paper or waxed paper (do no use aluminum foil--it will discolor the wine).  (209)

Okay, so this isn't so bad.  But we knew we had to put the waxed paper on top of the fish to put in the oven.  So we were trying to figure out what the heck Brown Paper was.  We were like, did parchment paper used to be brown?  Is it the same thing?  Nick finally found that it's regular brown paper.  Like from a grocery bag or butcher!  We're pretty sure that the technique is to butter the paper so that the butter absorbs into the paper and then drips on the fish.  Since brown bags can't be that clean we decided on using parchment paper.  However, since parchment paper is meant for the oven and has teflon in it so that it doesn't stick or absorb which kind of defeats the purpose of the paper absorbing the butter to flavor the fish.  Let me go on to the second part of the directions to show where we really got confused.

In body of recipe:
Bring almost to the simmer on top of the stove.  Lay the buttered paper over the fish.  Then place dish in bottom third of preheated oven.  Maintain liquid almost at the simmer for 8 to 12 minutes depending on the thickness of the filets.  (209)

Hmmm...this is where we got confused.  Since the margin right next to this section says to butter the paper we were wondering if that meant to simmer the paper on the stove top.  Paper + butter + stovetop sounds like a messy fire.  Then I was asking him (this is all Saturday night still over AIM) if that meant that we're supposed to put the dish with fish on the stovetop.  Now, I don't know what kind of cool pots and pans Julia had, but we were planning on putting our fish in a Pyrex which isn't made for the stovetop.  We were a little boggled.  In the end we buttered our parchment and just laid it on top of our cold fish before sticking it in the oven.

Being that this was our first time doing one of Julia's recipes, Nick thought that it would be fitting to learn to filet our own fish.  Let me tell you, I don't like fish.  I only make fish dishes because I don't want to make a lot of red meat and get tired of chicken and pork.  So not only do I not like eating fish, but I don't like looking at it either.  This is also why I didn't get a scuba certification when Christopher and my dad did theirs.  Needless to say, when I went to Ranch 99 I was a little disgusted by the whole fish counter.  I always walk by to gaze at the ugly eyes and people fighting over the fattest ones, but I've never had to actually pick one.  My dad saw that Rex Sole was a dollar cheaper per pound than just Sole.  What the difference is, I don't know nor do I really care at this point.  The price I guess.  I had the fish monger gut and scale the fish, but like I said, we were going to filet them ourselves.  While at the market I also got a couple of giant fish heads for the homemade stock that we were going to make.  Bleh, I was sooo grossed out that I made my dad hold my purse so that it didn't accidentally swing forward and get all fishy.

Now that we're done with the whole meal, we both agreed that it probably wasn't the best idea to learn to filet on a flat fish.  Round fish are most likely much easier.

Nick is having a good old time here filleting the fish, but he's into this kind of stuff.  His turned out really well.  Mine, on the other hand, had holes and bones still in it.  My dad ate those lovingly butchered pieces.  You can't tell by the picture below, but I was really grossed out.

After five hours in the kitchen and many, many dishes, this was our final product.  It doesn't look like much, but we managed to fill an empty dishwasher to the brim... and I wash all of our pots, pans, cutting boards, and knives by hand!  We made a spinach pancake that kind of tasted like a savory crepe and some squash to go along with the fish with mushrooms.  There was soooo much butter it was ridiculous.  I thought that the fish was okay, but I think that's only because it was drenched in buttery cream sauce and mushrooms.

Nail Polish, Nail Polish, and more Nail Polish

For once I actually felt like blogging just about one topic and not weeks and weeks worth of thoughts.  Probably because I'm so excited/obsessed with the Konad Nail Stamper that I keep buying more stuff to use with it.  On Saturday Nick and I met up for lunch at a little cafe and then strolled around Bed Bath and Beyond and Michael's.  From there we split off and I hopped over to Rite Aid because they had a nail polish brand that I've been looking for.  Back when I was living in NY with Edward, I had picked up a couple of nail polishes at our local Walmart.  I love these polishes and use them all the time.  So I figured I'd go out and get more.  For the longest time I couldn't remember where I had gotten them.  Since I like Target more than Walmart, I was convinced that I got them there, but never could seem to find the brand whenever I would go.  I was a little disappointed because I thought that maybe it was just the Targets on the east coast that carried it.  So I looked up the brand and found that it's sold in Walmart.  No wonder!  I planned on going out to Walmart in Martinez to look for the nailpolish, but really didn't want to drive all the way out there just for a couple bottles of nailpolish.  I checked the website again to see if maybe I could just buy them online.  I saw that they also sell their brand at Rite Aids.  Woopie!  There really aren't any Rite Aids near us, but since I was out at Michael's and it's across the street I figured I'd stop in.  While I was there I noticed that all nail polishes were buy one get one half off.  That was the end of my self control.  I ended up with eight different colors.  This is my "haul" as Youtubers call it.

I love this line.  I have four of their polishes so far.  I've always been a big fan of Sally Hansen nail polish but these take the cake.  I really enjoy their bold colors and the new flat brushes.  The paint quality is really good for a drugstore brand and I find that it doesn't chip nearly as quickly as some of the other brands.  These usually run around $7.50 a bottle, but you can pretty much wear them for a whole week without having to do touchups.  They advertise that they have the base coat and topcoat built in, but I still like to use a topcoat anyway.  I'm wearing Pat on the Black on my toe nails and love it.  With one coat it has that nice purply that I was going for, but with two it looks more black with hints of maroon when it's in the light.

This is the brand I was looking for.  The coverage is great and it only takes two coats to get it on smoothly without any streaks.  I believe it's only around $3 per bottle.  Fine by me!  My Wet and Wild black was all goopy because it was super old so I decided to get another one.

These pictures are compliments of Sinfulcolors.com.  These were $1.99 each so I thought I'd get a bunch of them.  I've been watching a lot of Giada De Laurentiis during my lunch time and she is always wearing this pale pink color.  I've been looking for a similar color for a few weeks now and am glad to say that Easy Going is very similar.  I also wanted a bubble gum color to see if I'd like it.  We'll see how that goes.  I figured if I don't like it then it was only $1.99.  I haven't tried any of these yet for everyday wear so I don't know how good they are, but when I did swatches for myself the other day they seemed okay.  I will definitely be wearing a topcoat with these to make sure that they last longer.  I find that the cheaper the nail polish, the faster that dreaded chipping occurs.


On top of all of these colors, I heard from one of the makeup gals I watch on Youtube that Zoya.com was having a special with three free nail polishes. It was the last day of the sale so I hurried and got my three nail polishes.  All I had to do was pay for shipping, which was $6.95.  Each bottle is $7, so it was a pretty good deal.  I haven't gotten a shipment confirmation yet, but hopefully it will come soon.  I have heard good things about this brand so hopefully they live up to all the good reviews.

You'll notice that I got quite a few purples.  I love purples, but they always turn out look like I'm wearing black nail polish.  My punk-kid days are over so this is not the look that I'm going for.  I'm still on the hunt for a good grape purple.  The most common problem that I run into is that they look great in the bottle, but then look black with shimmers on my nails.  The second problem is that if they don't look black then the color isn't really grapey but more toward the violet side.  I've even tried Googling these problems to see if anyone has any solutions.  Maybe normal people don't think about purple nail polish as much as I do.  Hahaha. So far I've tried about three different ones with all the same "black" results.  I like Trouble Maker and Venus, but they're not the deep grape purple that I'm looking for.  Pat on the Black is pretty close, but still looks like I'm wearing black nail polish.  After I take off these pink nails I'm going to try the SinfulColors I Love You to see if it's true to the color in the bottle.  Keep your fingers crossed!

New Nails

Okay, so I'm obsessed with the Konad Nail Stamper.  I went out and bought a bunch of new nail polish, as if I needed more, and did my nails last night.  I'm quite pleased at how well they turned out.  Nick and I did five hours of cooking today, which included learning how to filet a flat fish (we did two each...his were much prettier) and breaking apart four chickens and there are very few chips in my polish.  The ones I do see are tiny.  I'm amazed.  They're a little long for my liking, but this length shows off the stamp pattern better than my usual super short nails.  I'm going to have to cut them soon because it inhibits my typing accuracy.   I will talk more about our cooking in my next post and our new beer brewing adventures. That's right!  My dad, brother and I are adventuring into the world of beer brewing.  I'm very excited.  More to come soon.

Mommy's Sculpting

Okay so I tried to upload the video of my Mom's sculpting directly onto the blog, but it failed so I put it up on Youtube as an unlisted video so that you can only get to it if you know the url.  Christopher is saying "Mommy" because he's showing her the card again so that she knows what she is making since it looks like an entirely different animal than what is listed on the card.  The answer is in the video description, but try not to look until you see the whole thing.  


Please watch this as soon as you can.   I will be removing this video from Youtube in a couple of weeks so that my mom isn't floating around the web.
